Battle of the beats 2005 - IV: reviews by TVGHatesTVG

Even my heart cries by Forearm: Quality intro synth I think.

Quality intro synth I think. The 128 quality might be altering it a bit. The drums sound good. That snare sound crisp, but its getting a little lost in the atmosphere. The kick is dead on, and the hats are nice.

The drums sound great after the drop. They up nicely and keep the track really moving. Some of the rolls sound perfect.
Bass sounds about right.
Atmospehre is solid, i really like when it thins out and I can hear all the elements clearly.

Red Rum by kompressah: Solid intro. Wasn't

Solid intro. Wasn't expecting the uplifting strings, but all the sounds blend well.

Nice mood change in the break down. GRIMY

The amen sounds all right. The snare sticks out oddly, and I'd make the kick louder.

The bass change-ups are refreshing for me. Dont be afraid to use more drum edits. Also you could use more hi-hats to make it drive harder and fill out the hi end more. The low & mid ends are filled out nicely.

Haha, there's tho happy strings again. I'm really diggin the vibe change ups.
Man that is some greasy distortion. Props on that.

something wonderful by crank: The breaks work well. Nice

The breaks work well. Nice bongo work. Hi Hats might be a little loud.
I think the "Ha He" around minute 2 is a little silly and detracts from the feeling of the track.
The new melody in the 2nd drop breaks up the track some, but it doesn't sound as refined as the other the synths.

Overall it has a nice quality to it & strong mastering.

The snare is snappy. I would make that kick bigger tho.

The bass sounds kinda thin.
That lead synth has a working melody, but needs to be cleaner and not nearly as loud in the mix. I might even low pass the synths around 15k to cut down on the grating noise in the hi-end.

I can barely hear the atmosphere in the background (even in the breakdown), but it sounds cool.

The ride sounds good in the 1st drop, it could use a bit of reverb to get it driving more?

Definitely strong dance floor vibes, just clean up the mixdown.

phiuta by source: The reese has too much in

The reese has too much in the 14k-20k range. The drums sound good. The kicks could be compressed a bit more & brought up. You might also notch your bass some, so the kicks and snares sit better (do you hear the popping on your kicks?). The harp efx sounds out of place imo. The other effects and pads work well tho.

That edit right before the 2nd breakdown is ace. Very interesting track. And other than the small issue with the kicks & snares, the track is cleanly mixed.

The bass is getting me ready to rock. Dont be afraid to use more drum change ups and glitchy edits. They really sound great.

Drax.mp3 by King_Louis: Damn the drums are cool why

Damn the drums are cool why did they cut out so early in the intro?

Drums need to be louder. Try varying up the hi-hats some more.

The lead synth is a little too ravey imo.
I can barely hear the choir line, but it sounds quality except when you sustain the notes during the rave parts. Then it kinda clashes with the rest.

I like the new synth in the 2nd part.

Metro Lights by Screamheads: Nice intro. I like the way

Nice intro. I like the way you bring the drums in slowly. I like the subtle effects in the background.

The 909 or 808 layered under the kick is a little loud. I would also bring up the very top his on the snare.

The horn in the break down sounds a little thin.

Interesting bass-line, definitely not what I was expecting. The strings still work well against everything. The vox are little too repetitive.

seven samurai by 822: I like the ideas behind the

I like the ideas behind the intro, but the melody comes in a little sudden.
The snare sounds too small next to the kick and too drum machiny for the vibe of the track. The fills are good tho.
2 minutes in... dnb on the way?

Ahh, the drop. This is a very unique track (you get a point for that). As I said the snares need to be louder. The drum patterns really keep this track moving.
I'm not feeling the bass. Sounds like it has too much chorus.

The League Of Shadows by Bobby Dangerous: Sorry dude, but Batman has

Submitted by TVGHatesTVG on Sun, 2005-12-04 00:18.

Sorry dude, but Batman has been sampled a few times already.

The kicks sound strong, but the snares still need some more clang. The drums rolls are good, could be a little louder.

The bass feels a little too thin and repetitive. You might want to layer more... either add to the bass sample itself, or insert filter sweeps and other effects.

Fallen Warrior by DMJ AkA Jossi: Horns and with a drum

Submitted by TVGHatesTVG on Sat, 2005-12-03 23:27.

Horns and with a drum machine. I wanna hear some real breaks Eye-wink

Interesting track. Very epic. The new drums at 2minutes dont quite fit ontop properly. The rides sound too repetitive, try playing with the velocity some more. The snare sounds really odd now.
