Battle of the beatz 2007 - III: reviews by King_Louis

Cross Over by Significant Kids: Yes, yesm all good.

Yes, yesm all good.  Thought the beats might be a bit too distorted on the bottom eng, but other that that, all good.  Good atmospheres and leads, maybe the lead mixed with the vocal could have done with a bit of an eq?

Like the percussion in this a lot.  The delayed stab seemed a bit too loud in places.. maybe needs volume adjusting a bit here and there?  Vocal too actually, maybe needed to be more even

Also, beats up in the mix a bit when the bottom end is tighter?

Good work though...

Dubwise by Noctuary: Sounds like the guitar in

Submitted by King_Louis on Thu, 2007-08-09 22:01.

Sounds like the guitar in Jamrock at first.

I think this is a good tune.  Good dub feel, nice hats too.  Good piano - I rarely like piano in DnB so you've done well to get me to say that :]

Yeah all god, really like the guitar that comes in at 2:30 too... good stuff

Core Fractal by Contayjen: I think the track does well

Submitted by King_Louis on Thu, 2007-08-09 21:44.

I think the track does well in terms of energy.  Good vibe.. like a trancey subfocus track.  I think it has a lot of potential, beats are well produced.  Good atmospheres.

The thing that lets this down for me is the frequencies in the leads,  I think they could be better distorted and eq'd.. they seem to double up a bit and sound a bit messy in parts.

Good energy like I say though.  I reckon just leave it for a week or three then get in there with the subtractive eq.  Nice track :]

Numb by DJ Scape: I thought the atmospherics

Submitted by King_Louis on Thu, 2007-08-09 21:56.

I thought the atmospherics and beats in the intro were brilliant.  I didn't like the vocal and thought the reece wasn't very good though.  Not such a fan of the processing on the amen either tbh.

This has the makings of a very good tune, based on the vibe and atmosphere - my other comments are a matter of engineering and taste.

I'd like to hear another version of this:

Tougher amens
No vocal
Tougher reece

Good work though

Passive Aggressive by Abnormal Experimentalist: Excellent vibe and darkness

Submitted by King_Louis on Thu, 2007-08-09 22:14.

Excellent vibe and darkness here.  Didn't like the continual, panned and delayed effect.  Other than that, very nice dark vibe.  Needs much more engineer for phatness.  That reece is a bit 2d... needs to leap off the speakers more.  Good amen work.  Nice.

The Way To Amsterdam by Bluntman: Jazz.... HEAVY BEATS

Submitted by King_Louis on Thu, 2007-08-09 21:52.

Jazz.... HEAVY BEATS JAZZ!

Maybe too heavy for the style?  Beats were just about holding it together frequency wise... and in a tune like this, I reckon you wanted them a bit more silky.

Compositionally a nice tune.  Amen was a little unnecessary IMO.   So yeah, nice and smooth, but I'd ease up on some of that processing on the beats and ditch the amen.

DNB Alien inside Me by Essence: Intro sounds nice

Submitted by King_Louis on Thu, 2007-08-09 21:48.

Intro sounds nice compositionally and engineering wise.  Listen to this whoever was 227.. hear how the elements are nicely separated?

I'm afraid I didn't the stereo delayed lead at around 1:30.. personal taste thing.

Liked the beats all the way through.  I liked the intro best, could have made a tune switching that about IMO.

UNDERGROUND ALIEN FORTRESS by DARK GENIUS: Tune didn't really do

Submitted by King_Louis on Thu, 2007-08-09 22:08.

Tune didn't really do anything for me I'm afraid.  The lead arp line grated me a ltlle too.. not for heavy and sounding quite digital.  Thought the filtering / phasing / flanging was a little basic.  And the atmospheres a bit all over the place.

Beats were well produced actually, needed to come waaaaaay up in the mix IMO
