Battle of the beats 2005 - II: reviews by crank

Paint the Darkness by Virus: yeah, that was made this

Submitted by crank on Wed, 2005-08-17 14:14.

yeah, that was made this contest valuable. i dont say that's perfect thing but i see a lot here - intelligent edits, well thought structure. i'm sure at some degree that's the winner. hoping to take an interview from the producer.

Brick - Top by AtomicDog: some sort of smooth

Submitted by crank on Wed, 2005-08-17 13:50.

some sort of smooth cinematic sound here. pity the beat isnt at the front here, more ambient tendency here. there's no some total change of elements/sounds but track isnt boring, i like that rolling rhythm!

substance by Tetrabrot: shit, that kind of stuff

Submitted by crank on Wed, 2005-08-17 14:17.

shit, that kind of stuff like food for my hungry brains. a total mess of fucking tasty glitches & shots.
one drawback - it isnt complete.
tho it would be easy to add some only fx intro & breakdown.
i'd lissen more in that style definitely but not squarepusher Laughing out loud.

Deja Vu by 290719: hmm... i dunno if that was

Submitted by crank on Wed, 2005-08-17 13:41.

hmm... i dunno if that was conscious or not to use reverb that way but there's definity groove creating with reverb's reflections. anyway sounds interesting but some clipping or overdriving occurs again not clear it was conscious or not.
interesting amen pattern, tho i dont like amen.
structure isnt interesting 2 repeating parts. at least i expected beat at the front in some part. anyway some creativity here.

It's a wonderful life by 822 & Jared Whitham on guitar: sound like some collage,

Submitted by crank on Wed, 2005-08-17 14:01.

sound like some collage, than full-featured track like the author knows only one 100% way not to bore the lissener - change the vibe/arrangement drastically. ok, the goal is achieved - it's interesting but is there some concept gluing all parts together. maybe im not brain-gifted to realize that atm. that's probably 822's work Laughing out loud. i've given it 7 just as anti-boring attempt since dont think anyone else has valued it much.

swordglither by guanokalong: hehe, probably guano with

Submitted by crank on Wed, 2005-08-17 14:08.

hehe, probably guano with his electro short clip. anyway some emotions have been risen inside me. get your 7, man. if that would another contest Smiling

HorrorShow by King Louis: what the fucking mono sound?

Submitted by crank on Wed, 2005-08-17 14:12.

what the fucking mono sound? anyway some hard work is seen here. but since there's no space inside i cannot judge it well. some original but only original sample... hmm tho some nice drumming with one-shot samples. ok, probably that was a shortcurcuit during mixing session in hardware Laughing out loud

On The Top by Jossi: again sum monotonious track,

Submitted by crank on Wed, 2005-08-17 14:06.

again sum monotonious track, but quite sure sounding. not great mixing especialy mono dryish drums, so i give it 6

Plexible (first build) by MeMpHiS: dont like arps & gators but

Submitted by crank on Wed, 2005-08-17 13:56.

dont like arps & gators but there's some interesting amen work. nice epic vibe, but im not into these heavy arps/gators.
and the track isnt finished just a first part of it.

tune by dumi: monotonous 2-step dry beat

Submitted by crank on Wed, 2005-08-17 13:46.

monotonous 2-step dry beat with wobbling bass. not the worst but just dont like mono drums. structure is made some way to make it lissenable so that's even a big plus here. i think a bit more of variations and wise mixing could help here.

Paranormal Manifestations by the apocrypha: interesting reverb animation

Submitted by crank on Wed, 2005-08-17 13:53.

interesting reverb animation on bass, fxs but boooring. constant pressure of the same beat & bass isnt ear-friendly. of coz not the worst, just not well balanced structure.
