Battle of the beats 2005 - II: reviews by the apocrypha
Whoa, this tune is real strong, very powerful. The melodic elements hit just the right spot, love that deep bass, and the drums are so tight it almost makes me weep. Reminds me a lot of hipnotic’s style, but as far as I know he hasn’t entered the contest, has he? Anyways, the progression is quite amazing as well, with those drumlines getting more and more tangled and mangled as we get deeper into the tune. This is top quality tunage.
Very eerie intro, a nice drop and an interesting bassline. The drumlines are quite complex in there as well, and the high end is very clear. Arrangement wise, I gotta say I didn’t really like that bassline switch at 3:00-ish and at 5:00-ish, somehow doesn’t really fit in. The fx are nicely done, though personally I’m a fan of busier mixes, so if it was my tune I’d add more stuff, maybe some more melodic lines here and there.
The first impression I get of this tune is the loudness – it’s almost twice as loud as my own, there must have been some serious limiting at the mastering stage. Anyways, I guess this falls in the experimental drum’n’bass category with those scattered drums and heavily emphasised eerie atmospheric work. Really like that sub too, deep and pulsating. The mixdown is real good in this tune, everything sits well in its own place, but as a whole the track is quite short, and doesn’t develop much, and its structure is abit confusing sometimes.
Oh, some John B stylee action in this tune! Not really my favorite flavor of drum’n’bass, but it’s well done regardless. Punchy drums, a heavy square wave bassline. The meloy works well too and the mix has just the right amount of ingredients imho. The only flaws I can think of is that perhaps there should be some more high end on your snare, and the vocals should be a little less repetitive. Good work there.
Simple, DJ friendly, mainly drum intro. The drop isn’t too consistent in energy, but the production is good regardless; I especially like your sub – it’s thick and deep, the way it should be. What’s interesting about the track is that it’s basically the same two-lines applied to all the different synthlines/samples, even if it gets somewhat tiring at some point, and I’m guessing that the cheesy 70’s horror-move sound is done on purpose.
Well uh, I don’t really know how to rate this, since it doesn’t really fall in the dnb category. At first I thought that this melody that comes in around 2:00 into the track was going to lead to a filthy drop, but half way through the tune the drop still doesn’t happen, so yeah, I wouldn’t classify it as drum’n’bass. Regardless, I really liked the filtered drums you used in the intro, and it would have been better if you used these instead of the haevier, industrial style ones in the second part. I imagine that layered with a punchier, more straightforward break, they’d sound really wicked. Anyway, I found there to be too many switch-ups in the arrangement, that makes it kind of hard to follow. Now I don’t wanna sound condescending or anything but there is “potential” in this tune.
Now I really like the industrial sounding drums, the arppegios are also nicely done, but the bass is weak. It sounds stereo widened or even phase reversed to me…why would you want to do that to your bassline? I mean you can hear it well in the mix, but it severely lacks punch, and looking at the spectrum analyzer, it’s quite low. I’ve always thought that a stereo bassline was a no-no, especially in drum’n’bass. Arrangement-wise, the tune sounds abit unfinished imho, but with some more work on it, this tune could sound very, very good.
Pretty straightforward intro, there’s no fucking around there. The drumwork is quite obviously the domnant element, and there’s some really good stuff in that respect – cool pitch changes, nice variations, etc. But the whole track is very short really, it’s more like half a track. There’s more or less only 2 min of dnb…did you run out of ideas? It’s abit of a shame because it starts off real nice with those trancey arpggiating melodies, etc.
Hm, the intro is not bad in the first minute or so, but it gets abit tiring because, well…3 minutes?? Way too long, it’s like, twice as long as a regular intro. The drumwork’s not bad, but what’s with all the verb on them breaks? It leaves no headroom whatsoever for your pads, and it sounds like a fight for dominance between your drums and your bassline. I’m pretty sure I heard some clipping occurring here and there as well. The arrangement is also a bit unsure imho, it’s not really clear what starts where, etc.
Nice detuned symphonic sounds in the intro, really like the eerie feel. After 2 minutes it gets abit repetitive though. Not sure what you wanted to do here either, there’s no clear structure – the bass and drums just appear at some point, there’s no change of elements to underline the switches in the arrangement. The bassline and your break(s) also sound overcompressed to me…the kick can barely be heard for instance. What’s cool in this tune is the melodic and atmospheric elements though…imho it’d sound a whole lot better if the tune was built around that. Sorry if it’s harsh, just my 0.02$.
Quite a simple intro but it’s also subtle and menacing and it works for me. The drop isn’t convincing though, it lacks this energetic effect that makes you jump up and bounce. The mix is also abit muddy, I think it lacks some high end…there’s only the hats in that end of the spectrum and they’re quite isolated. I like the bassline, but again, it lacks presence in the upper frequencies, and that takes away some juice imho.
