Virus vs Essence - 'Embers' Remix Competition
Hey guys, DJ Essence and I recorded a track for our ViralEssence act and we thought it might work for a dnb remix comp.
We play by these rules:
- Essence will pick the best track out of all the entries. I guess if we have enough entries she can pick 1st 2nd and 3rd. Its her decision only. I will probably have a go at this myself but I expect to be judged with everyone else.
- There is no prize as such, this is for fun and practice. If the best track(s) are exceptional then who knows, maybe it will be worth sending off to labels, but thats a big IF so don't take that as a given by any means.
- There are no style guidelines. Essence told me that no one is obliged to do dnb if you fancy breakbeat or downtempo or whatever, as long as you make it a good track. I don't think anyone is happy with all the style judgements in BotB recently so just make it the best track you can. Whether its drumfunk, neuro, techstep, jump-up it wont matter as long as it sounds good. Just no trance or clownstep
Seriously, whatever you like. I'm sure most if not all of us are doing dnb anyway. - The contest will be open for 6 weeks. This makes the end date Sunday 2nd July, but I don't think there will be a problem extending it for another week or two if people are close but not quite finished on that date. We'll see how we go. Judging will occur in the week following and the winner(s) will be announced within a week or so of the last entry.
- You can use as many of the samples as you want. Chop them up, make them unrecognisable or even better, just make your own totally new track using just the vocals.
- One entry per artist/producer. Collaborations are acceptable. I can't think of anything else...
See next post for samplepack links. There are .wavs (compressed with WinRar so you will need WinRar to unpack it) and there are also LAME encoded 320k mp3s to save a bit of time for those on dial/up as the pack is smaller. The MP3s are in a .zip file so you need winzip for that one.
The jpg in the pack shows the structure of the track for placing the vocal...note there are 2 extra irregular sections if you are using the accapella uneditted. Or of course you could just chop it and rearrange if you don't like this structure.
The backing samples are given mainly as guidelines. You can mess around with them but using them without changing them in any way is a bit lame in my opinion. I have included the 90bpm drum loops as these can be rex'd or chopped or resampled faster.
Noob tip: I have included the full backing (no drum backing bounce.mp3/wav) to layer on the vocal to begin with, it might make it easier to find the melody/chords/bassline in the tune if you need some help getting started.
PLEASE only use these samples for this remix comp. You can keep the vocal samples for personal use but all rights are reserved regarding potential releases. This means you can't make many money without cutting us in mwahahah
As if we'd be so lucky but you never know, lol. If your track is that good we'll push it ourselves and we'll all be rich and famous...
Many thanks to Crank for hosting this. ![]()
See you at the finish line guys

On request I have uploaded an extra sample pack. It is the split vocals, both backing and lead parts, both dry (no reverb or other heavy fx).

PS I don't know if we want anonymous upload in this, I don't think there is any point as Essence will be judging, but what do you guys think?
